Lauren Berman

Bio

Lauren Berman creates vibrant, hand-cut paper collages that tap into the sensations and memories of childhood. Her work is shaped by both her years teaching young children and her time as an associate archivist at The Jim Henson Company, where she catalogued the original sketches and collages of Jim Henson—an experience that continues to influence her playful, process-driven approach.

She makes hand-cut collage silhouette images of children engaged in everyday moments. Set against simple, open backgrounds, these pieces feel like quiet fragments of memory, inviting viewers to pause, reflect, and connect to something familiar.

Inspired by Henri Matisse’s technique of “drawing with scissors,” Lauren cuts directly into colored paper, allowing shapes to emerge intuitively. The resulting forms are sometimes intentionally imperfect and tactile, echoing the way children create.

Lauren studied fine art at Vassar College, Connecticut College, and Sarah Lawrence College (Florence, Italy), and holds an M.S.Ed. from Bank Street College of Education. She lives in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY with her family.
